Organ Mountains National Monument and Old Town Mesilla

We were on our way to the Organ Mountains but Carolyn found some info about a Recycled Roadrunner so we had to find that first. It was pretty unique.

Across town we found the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. This park wasn't quite what we were expecting as it is actually 10 different spots in one general area.

We actually went through residential areas to get here.

Dripping Springs Natural seemed to be one of the more accessible areas....others are mainly hiking areas.

There was a Visitor Center with a museum. We spent some time talking to a work camper manning the center.

This was actually part of a ranch but it is quite a hike from the Visitor Center and it doesn't look like it did back in the day.

One of the things we wanted to try while in New Mexico was an Indian Taco more commonly called a Navajo Taco. So far no luck but yesterday Carolyn did some Internet research and found that the El Patron Café served Navajo Tacos. They were on the menu for today so that is where we headed for lunch.

Yes, this is the right place. It is small but I think they do a lot of takeout too.

And they were indeed well known.

We had no idea a Navajo taco would be almost the size of a dinner plate......and it seems that French fries go with everything.

They were very good and yes, we took home enough for the next day's lunch.

We checked out the neighborhood as it was called the Mesquite Historic District. Okay, so we didn't know that until we tried to find our way out of the area.

This was actually our next planned stop.  Old Town Mesilla.

This tells you about the markings on the bandstand.

For someone who died so young and lived when travel wasn't that easy, Billy the Kid really got around.

There was one other item that we wanted to try while in New Mexico and time was running out. Biscochitos are the official cookie of New Mexico but they are very hard to find unless you are there around Christmas.  But Carolyn found a place on the Internet and, guess what, it was right here in Old Mesilla.

They were good with some hot tea.

Last stop was a little disappointing only because it wasn't what we were expecting.

We drove quite a ways on a gravel road and arrived to find that they had very short hours and were really primarily for birders.

Oh, well, it was another great day anyway!
