Iconic Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell, and Glen Canyon NRA

Image result for lake powell campground and rv park page azWe left Albuquerque on Tuesday morning on our way to Page AZ. We set up at Lake Powell Campground and RV Park. We also looked at Lake Powell Wahweap Campground and a boondocking at Lake Powell Campground but we decided that our first choice made more sense for us since it was closest to everything.  The kids were really hoping to hike Antelope Canyon but it is closed due to the virus so, on to plan B.  A trip during these times requires willingness to change plans as you go. Indian reservations are definitely shutdown.

We headed out to Horseshoe Bend that evening. If you haven't been there for a year or so, you are in for a surprise. The city owns the land in front of the national park area and they have built a huge blacktop parking lot. It apparently alleviates a problem with people parking along the highway but I think the $10 per car charge was their real incentive. Unfortunately, the first 40 feet of the path is very soft sand eliminating the possibility that anyone in a wheel chair can get to the rest of the path which is hard packed. Not a great move on their part. You can see that the original path that was hardpacked is blocked off. That's a national park vehicle on the park side.

I sent the rest on ahead because I knew that I might not make it all the way at all and sunset was approaching. Thankfully the kids took some great pictures. I did make it to the part of the path that heads downhill but had to wait there for them to return.

I think this is an especially great picture which my son Steve took as a selfie. I met a number of people that weren't able to make it all the way as well as some that did. One young lady shared her photos with me as they were walking out. They were great.

I think some of those really great photos showing the entire horseshoe were taken from the very edge which looks great but is not really safe or perhaps even from a helicopter. Anyway, it is beautiful.

This was our campground.

It was cool enough for Steve and Helen to sleep in the back of the truck on the bed they had made.

The kids were happy that the indoor pool was open and we were happy that it wasn't crowded.

The campground has three or four conestoga wagons for glamping as well as a number of cabins. They also have tent camping areas.

Helen took this picture the next morning out the tailgate of the truck. She is an early riser. Harley and Angus were sound asleep in the motorhome with me. That is a coyote. Apparently the people in the 5th wheel on the other side of us were up and had a little dog outside. Fortunately, after she took the picture, Helen made noise and the coyote headed out quickly.

Our next adventure after breakfast was to head over to Glen Canyon dam on Lake Powell which is right next to the town.

Unfortunately, the Visitor's Center was closed as was almost every Visitor's Center on our trip but you can still take advantage of signs and the great scenery.
Lake Powell is huge. It is over 500 feet deep behind the dam and it took 17 years to fill the lake area after the dam was built. There were a lot of boats on the lake although you can't see them here.

Next we went on to the Glen Canyon NRA.  We checked out the campground. There were a lot of campers in several different loops. The kids and grandkids walked down to the beach to go swimming. It was at least half a mile down from the parking lot even though it was advertised as being close to the camping area.

We stopped at several overlooks on the way back to the RV park. The kids hiked down to the "Hanging Gardens".

Okay, I am so done with this post. It is acting so squirrely no matter what I do. Hopefully, it will be viewable. Next stop will be Bryce National Park.

  1. $10/car at Horseshoe is a rip off, but looks like you saw quite a bit and doesn't look overly crowded.
