Palo Duro Canyon

The next morning we set off for Palo Duro Canyon which is just south and east of Amarillo. The land is all flat until you get to the edge of the canyon which is second in size only to the Grand Canyon. There is plenty of camping down in the canyon. And if you come during the summer months when it is blazing hot, you can see the play "Texas" which is put on outdoors with the canyon as the scenery. Do not miss a chance to see it. Kids and grownups alike will really enjoy it.

The first place we headed was the Visitor's Center which is near the top of the canyon.

There are a lots of hiking trails throughout the canyon.

The view outside the center is great.

But there is lots to see inside as well.

The Visitor's Center used to be a lodge. Another beautiful building built by the CCC.

The JA Ranch has a lot of history in this area.

Here you can see the top of a Cow Camp cabin on the other side of this hill.

They are rustic but very interesting and many of them were occupied when we were there.

You can see an air conditioner fairly well hidden next to the cabin.

It looks like they have a fireplace but I think cooking is done outside and you go across the road to the campground to use the restrooms.

Palo Duro Canyon was the site of a significant battle during the Indian Campaign from 1874-1875.

Can you see the cave in the middle of the top third of the picture?

We stopped for a picnic lunch.

The scenery at Palo Duro is interesting and unique.

These people are praying for rain.

We enjoyed our time in Palo Duro Canyon. You can camp, hike, horseback ride, and just enjoy the scenery.
