The first place we headed was the Visitor's Center which is near the top of the canyon.
There are a lots of hiking trails throughout the canyon.
The view outside the center is great.
But there is lots to see inside as well.
The Visitor's Center used to be a lodge. Another beautiful building built by the CCC.
Here you can see the top of a Cow Camp cabin on the other side of this hill.
They are rustic but very interesting and many of them were occupied when we were there.
You can see an air conditioner fairly well hidden next to the cabin.
It looks like they have a fireplace but I think cooking is done outside and you go across the road to the campground to use the restrooms.
Palo Duro Canyon was the site of a significant battle during the Indian Campaign from 1874-1875.
Can you see the cave in the middle of the top third of the picture?
We stopped for a picnic lunch.
The scenery at Palo Duro is interesting and unique.
These people are praying for rain.
