Evacuating in Advance of Hurricane Nate

With Tropical Storm Nate developing into Hurricane Nate and projected landfall in New Orleans expected Saturday night, most of us decided to evacuate the area in advance. We didn't want to compete with New Orleans people for highway space and gas/diesel just in case they decided to evacuate this time around. Out of the 125 pumps the city has to pump out water since they are below sea level, there are a number that are still not working.

Vicki, Page, Martha & Pat, Liz, Anita, Mary Jane, and I all headed out on Friday. The park refunded the remaining days that we had already paid in advance for and said they were closing the park at noon on Saturday.

While the park is across the river from New Orleans and supposedly on higher ground, we didn't want to test the waters.

There was a levee between us and the water.  These floating cabins were on the other side of the levee but they were getting ready to close the gate in the levee so there was no one in the cabins.

Mary Jane and I headed out on highway 90 figuring that we would be out of the storm area once we hit Lafayette and got back on I-10. We stopped/called several RV parks which were full and decided to go on to Sulfur where we stayed at A+ Motel and RV Park where we stayed on our way to New Orleans. Just before we arrived, I got a text from Vicki. She was very unhappily parked in the shade with her generator running at the Isle of Capri Casino in Lake Charles because she couldn't find a park with an available space. I asked if she wanted me to reserve her a space where we were....yes, please.....and she jumped back in the drivers seat and headed towards Sulfur. We all relaxed in the hot tub a bit later on and, no, Mary Jane did not bring her new phone to the hot tub.

Carolyn, Michele, Kat, and Barb all headed out very early Saturday morning in a light rain.

As it turned out, Nate actually came ashore at Biloxi but you just never know what a hurricane will do until it does it. We weren't sorry we left when we did.

Fortunately this storm didn't do as much damage as the last two hurricanes have done.
