2023-9-19 Big Bend Chisos Mountains

Tuesday morning, Beverly, Myrt, Elaine, and I were on our way back to the coolest place in Big Bend. By coolest, I mean the coolest temperatures because all of Big Bend is cool. The road up to park center is steep and curvy. It is not recommended for any RVs over 20'.

We stopped to read the signs along the way.

See the "Window Trail" and the "Window View Trail". Be sure you know the difference because they are very different. Anyone can do the "Window View Trail" even if in a wheelchair.

Yes, there are bears and mountain lions in the park. Be absolutely sure to use the bear boxes and follow the instructions for camping and picnics. The bears were almost extinct in the park but they made a comeback when they crossed the border from Mexico.

There are many trails in the park and hiking temperatures are cooler in the Chisos area.

There are lots of cactus up here but it is also greener up in the mountains.

This was taken on the "Window View Trail". This trail is paved and has several benches along the way. The view is breath taking.

There are pockets of water up here from the infrequent rain.

We went into the Chisos Visitor center where there were lots of displays.

This is one day we didn't take a picnic. We planned to have lunch in the Lodge dining room. The food was good and the prices were reasonable. I took this photo from the patio while we were waiting for the restaurant to open.

Great views wherever you looked.

The restaurant and Lodge check-in are up above the Visitor Center and park store. They have a separate parking lot.

It was nice to have a cooler day up in the Chisos. I forgot to mention that there is another campground up here but it is more suitable for tents and very tiny RVs like Class Bs. The roads are twisty and the sites are very short.
