The first place on our agenda to visit today was the Buddy Holly Museum. Unfortunately, pictures aren't allowed inside the museum display area. It was very interesting even though much of it was posters and pictures telling about his life. There were also many pieces of memoribilia like some of his guitars and furniture from his room at his family home.
Buddy was well known and recognized for his heavy black rimmed glasses.
I knew that Buddy was born in Lubbock and died in a small plane crash near Clear Lake Iowa. I also knew he was young but didn't realize he was only 22 years old. His music career was very short but a big influence on other musicians. He and his band played many local events when he was only in junior and senior high school. He had many hit records during his short career. He moved to New York and married Maria Elena when he was only 20. He toured England with his band the Crickets and was on a three week tour of the mid-west when he died in the plane crash.
Across the street from the museum is a stage area and plaza with a statue of Buddy.
Lubbock is very proud of Buddy Holly and they should be. He was a big musical influence.
While we were touring the museum, Marlene was out doing some letter boxing (similar to geocashing) and she came across Buddy Holley's graveside and took a picture for us. Note that he was known as Buddy Holly but his last name was actually Holley........a printing error early in his career.
We enjoyed the museum and received a half off coupon to the Silent Wings of Flight which was our next stop for the day.
